Turning the Compost Pile

Last fall, several truck-loads of seaweed, Garry Oak leaves, a pile of chipped wood from the orchard and farm, and a load of rotted manure were piled and mixed for composting. The tractor has been invaluable in keeping this pile turned and now in transporting  it to the gardens. In March, visitor Jochen Kumm practises his skills with the backhoe and bucket .

Digging a trench for buried cable

I had been working on getting basic electrification in the barn so since the ground was soft, I decided to do the last leg to the house. Then I decided to run a water line up from the standpipe at the house to behind the rock wall at the picnic table area… Looks like a moat, but will get it filled in this week.

Moving a Cedar Tree

One Cedar tree in the corner of Alex and Virginies garden which I planted 20 years ago was transplanted in order to open up the light.

Moving and Placing a Water Tank

I was able to find a used 2000 gallon tank in the neighborhood for a good price . This 2000 gallon plastic tank was taken off the truck then moved over to near the barn where it could catch rain water running off the metal roof.

Building the Tractor Barn

RAFTERLIFT2011-08-21 12.13.43
The front-end loader is used to lift each roof truss into place– supervised by Ginger.

The tractor had to do some work this summer in order to have a dry place to live. The pictures below show the process involved in lifting the manufactured roof rafters or trusses  from Slegg lumber into place with the front-end loader of the tractor. This was the only part in the construction that I never undertook to make myself (wise move!)

The roof trusses are supported by beams on the three vertical posts on each side, not by the walls which stand on  the three horizontal raw logs of each of the side walls, placed on an old concrete barn foundation.
